Peaky Blinders is my next port of call after Vikings as I like the look of it. Also, I award you severalteen internet points for using the term 'series' rather than 'season' Smoke

Cheers for the Vikings recommndation Scott. Just finished the fourth and I upgrade my rating from canny to very good. I generally like the acting, the casting is brilliant, the scripts are really well written and above all who knew Son of Ken Barlow was such a good actor? lmao He's excellent in this.

Not so much a fan of Peaky Blinders so won't be pursuing that. I'll go back to watch Vikings five when it's all done and try something else in the meantime.

Fucking spoilers :naughty:

Others say the opposite. I'll see for myself in due course. Will try one of Scott's other suggestions next, maybe The Last Kingdom.

Could have swore I put another post in here  Must have been editing while pissed again and fucked up

I've had another go at Game of Thrones. Warming to it now (even Sean Bean), just about to finish the first series.

Seeing accomplished, stalwart actors like James Cosmo and Peter Vaughan is a nice surprise. I first saw Cosmo in The Sweeney early '70s playing a hard-nosed Glaswegian copper, and I've seen the wonderful Peter Vaughan in any amount of things. I keep having to rewind though as there's so many fucking things going on I forget what's what, who's who and where's where. Nothing at all to do with the alcohol I drink while watching either  Smoke

I watched The Last Kingdom 1 & 2. Enjoyed it and will keep watching but on the whole I like Vikings 1-4 better. The lead in TLK is competent I suppose, but fairly flat and nowhere near as engaging as Vikings' Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar with a dash of charisma and, equally importantly, a sense of humour. I doubt Fimmel is a 'great' actor but he's well-directed, Ragnar fits him nicely and he does it very well. Vikings also has jester / fool Floki and the seer, both stand-out characters and brilliantly done by their actors. I think Hirst handles both very well, making fool and seer both useful dramatic devices and, at least in Floki's case, fully fleshed-out character at the same time (same goes for Athelstan in a way actually). And Skarsgard is a right scene-stealer at times lmao Above all I think the main difference is in characterisation. Vikings main characters are more interesting and better rounded than those in TLK. I neither know nor care which of the two shows is the more authentic historically Smoke

Assuming I could have wielded an axe proficiently, I'd have enjoyed the Viking lifestyle - I'd have managed the hard-drinking and pillaging bit no bother, and paganism seems a much more attractive illusion than Christianity Smoke

Floki is raker.

Vikings 5 is horrendous. Just about got through the ten episodes.

Not watched 5 yet but I was thinking after the fourth another long series might be stretching it a bit. Hirst's writing was very impressive across the first three and I think up to that point the use of a single (talented) writer was a real positive. It always feels consistent, purposeful and evenly-paced. Hirst was in total control of his material and he has the lucky facility of being a fine phrasemaker (something often overlooked when people talk about writing).

Fourth series was still great but I thought the strain of doing so much to a tight schedule was starting to show at times. Then when the abysmal Heahmund turned up towards the end my first thought was this might be going to turn to shit. He looks like a 21st century hipster time-warped in and the actor is an appalling try-hard 'look-at-me' twat. Just all wrong in every way. Five also has to carry the loss of the shows central focus plus Ecbert's gone, Helga's gone, they seem to have lost their way with Bjorn and Rollo went awol ages ago. Doesn't augur well and leaves them a lot to do.

Pleased I took on board the general consensus on Game of Thrones. Just started the third now and am thoroughly enjoying it, great entertainment. It helps when you've got the likes of Patrick Malahide and Charles Dance kicking around, and I have a hunch the involvement of actors of their calibre raises the standard generally. The dwarf is obviously great as well (despite his slightly odd accent) and so are plenty others - I especially like both actors playing the depraved twins. Anyway, well-recommended forum Smoke

The Dwarf is mint, but there are so many great characters throughout, you'll love some as much as you hate Joffrey Smoke

Aye it seems full of interesting people, an array of freaks, deviants, schemers, magicians, megalomaniacs and mavericks. It's great on that score, and I like the way the main characters are developing. I'm enjoying the story as well now I've gotten to grips with all the various strands.

You've got to have a Joffrey - all these good dramas have a hate figure. He is so absolutely despicable and you just know when he shows up there's a cunt's trick just around the corner. He's also very well cast, as the actor has one of the most punchable faces I've ever seen lmao

Iwan Rheon is fantastic as Ramsay Bolton but I'm absolutely convinced he's borrowed heavily from Malcolm Macdowell's unforgettable Alex in A Clockwork Orange. Not a criticism at all by the way, as all good actors are shameless thieves.

Just started 7. Cracking show and I'll probably rewatch the whole thing quite soon.

Anything else in the realm of marathon boxset-type telly shows unmentioned here worth picking up chaps? (Relatively recent obviously, I know all the old ones - in fact I'd recommend some but I find younger people don't watch older shows generally so I'll not waste my time lmao )

Liked / like: Game of Thrones, Vikings, The Last Kingdom

Did not like: Peaky Blinders, Black Sails

Meanwhile I'll try Sons of Anarchy, as I did think The Shield was a canny watch.

Altered Carbon is decent. The Wire if you haven't seen it, Steers.

Sons of Anarchy I've never bothered with but the consensus is it goes downhill after a number of seasons and just goes on and on...

I liked SOA, gave up on The Wire after about 2 episodes as couldn't understand what the fuck they were talking about, innit.

Band of Brothers is good, not sure if we've mentioned that.

I was exactly the same with The Wire, managed three or four episodes. Authentic street language is all very well but fuck me, I found it incomprehensible at times. Might give it another go one day like as it's so highly regarded.

Band of Brothers is absolute quality, in its way one of the best tv shows I've seen. I didn't think The Pacific was even half as good which was a shame, but hopefully The Mighty 8th will see them back on form. Looking forward to that.

Will have a gander at Altered Carbon at some point. I was looking round last night for something to start though and found I couldn't be arsed. Think I'm boxsetted-out for now so will give it a rest and maybe try to find a computer game I can waste a few weeks on instead.

I've tried The Wire more thane once too, it was digitally remastered & I started watching it again, gave up at the same point as it was hurting my head, like Arsenal TV but not funny, blud.

Have always loved WW1 & WW2 related programmes, drama or otherwise Smoke

Me too. I've spent countless hours watching old mainly British but also some American war films. Most of them are, as you'd expect, very much made from the allied point of view (some conscious propaganda). Don't care, still love loads of them Smoke

Off the top of my head The Desert Rats is a favourite, just a cracking action film with some great acting. Stalag 17 is another, top notch film it is. Actually, there's not many from the '40s to the '60s I don't own on dvd lmao On this subject, I recently re-watched The World at War with Olivier narrating, well worth watching if you've not seen it.

I don't like watching anything with subtitles. I rarely watch foreign language films partly because of this. I find them too distracting - no problem if they pop up occasionally to translate something obviously, irritating if they're always on. I suppose I could listen to more hip hop music and shit to familiarise myself with that sort of language, but I'd rather stab myself in the eyes Smoke

Meh, might go back to it another time.

Watching an old afternoon film on telly was a staple of my childhood and likewise, I liked war films best. My dad preferred westerns like, daft old cunt Smoke I'll leave a few slightly lesser-known old war films I like here, in case of any use.

The Desert Rats, The Desert Fox, Malta story, Five Graves to Cairo, Operation Amsterdam, School for Secrets, Seven Thunders. All typical old matinee fayre and all a canny way to pass an idle hour or two.
